Chasing Hair Loss

Androgenic alopecia or more commonly known as Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) can be unpredictable; it may start in the late teens and progress aggressively, alternatively it can start in the late 30´s and still advance to a high hair loss pattern

Deciding when to start surgical hair restoration can mean the difference between long term happiness with well thought out goals and planning or constant concerns that make an educate plan very difficult to sustain

It is tempting at any age, but especially at a younger age when signs of hair loss first occur to seek out a permanent solution; solves the problem. But a hair transplant is not a cure for hair loss, hair loss will still progress

Hair loss, although not wished for is at least natural and as such ordinary with the majority of men suffering some degree of MPB; if surgical hair restoration is not performed with a long term plan it can appear unnatural

Restoring slight hair line or temporal recession thinning will automatically fix the starting point of the hair transplant restoration, this will never recede and from there on if hair loss progresses to a high Norwood stage fix a large surface area to treat

Small procedures may seem a good idea as they can be easily camouflaged with a little creative hair styling. Also can give the impression almost no hair loss has occurred and the individual retains a good head of hair. A problem is as hair loss continues behind the grafted area small patches of thinning, miniaturised or even no hair will be left, pockets of hair less areas that create cosmetically unnatural patterning of hair growth

The obvious temptation, or even necessity it to restore these areas to maintain a natural looking head of hair; but small touch up or filler sessions mean entering the donor area on multiple occasions, potentially frequently, dependent on how rapid hair loss progresses; chasing hair loss

Donor hair and skin management starts to become difficult; each entry into the area reduces the donor hair density and skin laxity. If the extractions are localised it may increase the potential for trauma and hair miniaturisation. Over the longer term having minor but frequent small procedures will ultimately reduce the total number of grafts that can be safely harvested over time. This makes treating advanced hair loss impossible unless the candidate has exceptional hair characteristics, which is not the norm

Going back to fixing a low hair line; as we age, even if we do not suffer from progressive hair loss the hair line matures and still looks natural with the slight changes in our facial make up; and as said, fixes the starting point for restoration

As the need for hair continues and increases it will potentially not be possible to harvest enough hair to ensure a balanced coverage can be achieved from the hair line through the mid-section and over the crown

This can leave an unnatural pattern of hair growth that draws attention for all the wrong reasons.

Before entering into surgical hair restoration be mindful that regardless of age, or hair loss pattern the ultimate goal is for a natural appearance. This may mean redefining goals and maybe not achieving the ideal expectations, but better that and be happy with a natural looking result that over time remains perfectly natural
